Henry County Schools Facts Page

The Henry County School System is making a name for itself. The school system's commitment to excellence has kindled a spirit of excitement and community pride in the schools. A demand for excellence in instruction is the priority that drives the school system's dynamic planning for curriculum development, personnel recruit, and facilities construction.

The focus on excellence in instruction has led to a continuous improvement in the county's standardized test scores. Henry students consistently win state and national recognition for outstanding achievement. Henry County 11th-grade students did as well or better than their counterparts in metro Atlanta and scored well above state averages on the 1996 Georgia High School Graduation test. Scores on the Scholastic Aptitude Test have shown a 53-point increase over the past six years.

Further evidence of this commitment to excellence in instruction can be found in the school system's strong curriculum department, which in the past two years has added coordinators for language arts/reading, mathematics, science, social studies, instructional technology and vocational/career education. In addition to a strong emphasis on basic skills, the instructional program offers varied and balanced classes designed to enrich students' educational opportunities and to meet their individual ability levels.

These outstanding programs include an elementary foreign language pilot program, a multi-faceted approach to teaching language arts, computer assisted instruction in elementary schools, the use of Mathematics Their Way for students in kindergarten and first grade, physical education specialists, band, music and art teachers, and guidance counselors in all elementary chools. Other system programs include gifted and special education from elementary through high school, remedial programs, and an honors program in English, mathematics, social studies and science for academically talented students in grades 9-12.

In addition, the school system offers a sound Advanced Placement Program in high schools and a comprehensive vocational education program. All three high schools also have nationally recognized National Junior ROTC Programs. All schools are accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and Accredited With Quality by the Georgia Accrediting Agency.

Because many families have parents who work out of the county, the school system offers an after-school enrichment program for grades K-5. Supervised and directed by certified teachers, the program is available from the end of school hours until 6:00 p.m. at all elementary schools.
